Bad Superhero, part 2:
Read part one here
*~*~*~*~*
Mr Achates dragged Civilian through the trees, mind in a flurry, branches snapping beneath them in a rush. When they got to Mr Achates cottage, Banjo was sleeping at the door, his head raising slightly and tilting.
“Good boy, Banjo,” Mr Achates said as the collie stretched and let out a whining yawn before walking over to Civilian and nudging his head against Civilian’s hand.
“Hi Banjo,” Civilian whispered, their voice so far away. Seeing their body in third person. Mr Achates opened the door for them and led Civilian to their small kitchen, pulling a chair out from the table and clearing a space on the table.
“I’m sorry about the mess,” said Mr Achates and Civilian just looked at them, trying for a smile and not even managing to turn their lips up for him.
“Don’t be,” said Civilian.
Mr Achates nodded stiffly, and rubbed their hands together in front of them. “Right so, tea?”
“Please.”
Civilian heard the kettle turn on and start to boil, their eyes unfixed and unfocused on nothing in particular, fingers casually scratching Banjo behind his ear. A steaming mug was set in front of them, and Civilian blinked, sitting back in their chair and looking at Mr Achates as he sat on a chair in front of them. A tray of biscuits on the table between them.
The thought of eating made Civilian gag. Their house was probably still burning and here they were drinking tea with their neighbour and his dog.
Their legs were moving before they registered it, and Mr Achates was there blocking them. “Hey kid?”
“I have to go… I have to kill Superhero. I have to go, I should be… I should be burning I should be with them.”
“I can’t let you walk out there.”
Civilian’s eyes were wide as a child’s as they looked up at Mr Achates, tears streaming down their spot caked face. “Please.”
“If you go out there now, you’ll die and Superhero will never pay for what they’ve done to your family. All they’ve taken from you. If you leave now I won’t stop you, but you’ll be giving Superhero exactly what they want.”
Civilian hiccuped a sob, wrapping their arms around their waist as their legs went from under them. Mr Achates caught them and the pair sunk to the ground together, Mr Achates running their hand through Civilian’s hair soothingly.
“I promise they’ll pay, Civilian. I promise. We just need to be smart about this, okay?”
Civilian nodded, another sob tearing itself from their chest. Snot and tears wetting Mr Achates shirt, but he didn’t seem to mind.
“You’ll stay with me, and Banjo. I know we’re not much, but we’ll be like family. One made by unfortunate circumstances but hey, you kids were basically like mine anyways with how much I caught you over here. I’ll train you. Make you stronger. Strong enough to beat the best.”
Civilian shook their head, pulling back from Mr Achates, a fire burning in their eyes. “Not strong enough to beat the best,” Civilian said, voice raw. “Strong enough to kill the best. I want them destroyed.”
Mr Achates smiled. “You got it, kiddo. How bout we get off the floor?”
Civilian smiled, wiping their nose with their sleeve and nodded. “Yeah.”
“Didn’t make you tea for nothing, did I? Heals all wounds, Civilian. Time and Tea, mark me.”
*~*~*~*~*
Mr Achates training was vigorous and relentless, every morning they would run through the woods with Banjo, carving out trails and paths for themselves after a while making it easier to run on.
After their run: home for breakfast. Eggs usually. Civilian would go out with a basket following Mr Achates to his chicken coop. The first time Civilian had just stood there, expression blank but the basket shaking in their hands.
Civilian used to come here with older brother and younger sister. They would sneak in just after sunrise and steal some eggs. Mr Achates saw like he always saw, and the second week of doing it he opened the window. The three thieves froze as a small basket was handed out through the window wordlessly. The window shut before they could laugh or make an excuse or say thank you.
Now brother and sister were dead. Burned. Gone.
“Civilian. Hey, Civilian. Look at me. Look at me, it’s just the chicken coop.”
“Brother and— we—“ Civilian managed, but then broke down sobbing again. Mr Achates was at their side, walking them back inside and telling them it was okay.
“I know. Dammit I should’ve known. I’m so sorry, Civilian. You stay here. Banjo! Stay with Civilian. I’ll run to the shop, grab some bacon instead.”
“No,” Civilian said, their voice shaking. “No. We’ll have eggs. Please? Can we have eggs?”
Mr Achates worried his bottom lip, eyes sympathetic and soft. “Civilian it’s not a problem, I can—“
“Please Mr Achates. Can we have eggs?”
“Are you sure?”
“I’m sure,” Civilian said with a sharp, clarifying inhale. Mr Achates nodded.
“Okay. Let me grab them. You stay here.”
Civilian gave him the basket and stayed in the house, arms around themselves, safe. Alive. They stood from the chair and walked to the small kitchen, filling the kettle and putting it on.
After breakfast Mr Achates insisted on teaching Civilian how to box. “Why don’t we just use weapons?” Civilian asked.
“Because weapons can get thrown from your hands and if you don’t know how to fight hand to hand, you may as well give up now.”
“I’m not giving up,” Civilian told him hotly.
Mr Achates just smiled and nodded, said: “I know, kid. Now put your hands up, make ‘em into fists. Here, like this. Thumb out. Protecting your face, and when they’re not protecting your face they’re either punching or they’re protecting your ribs. Trust me when I say getting winded is a bi—“ Civilian looked at him as he cleared his throat and said: “bad thing.”
After hand to hand combat it was lunch. After lunch they relaxed, had a shower. Mr Achates told Civilian that he would get them books so they could sharpen their mind.
“Someone like Superhero doesn’t go down with a halfwit.”
“What about school?” Civilian asked, eyes owlish.
“I don’t think it’s the best idea. Superhero thinks you’re dead. If we give your name—“
“What if I take your name?” The question stunned Mr Achates. It was summertime so it wasn’t something he had to answer right away.
“Obviously you can’t go to school here.”
“I know,” said Civilian. “I can go to the city school. The one Superhero went to. Learn all they learned.”
Mr Achates sat back in his armchair, just looking at the kid in front of them in awe. The determination in their eyes. The resolve in their mind so clear.
“In order to beat the best I have to be the best.”
Mr Achates just smiled. “Okay. You can take my name. Go to city school. I’ll look at getting you enrolled.”
“Thank you.”
The quiet politeness pulled at his heartstrings, and something selfish and horrid in him was happy that the kid was living there with him now. Filling the space. Almost like they were a child of their own.
“You’re welcome.”

Who was your favourite mario character as a kid, and who is it now?
honestly? that's a pretty tough question for me to answer, because i played a lot of mario games growing up, and i don't know if younger me would've been able to choose a favourite. in terms of established characters, i think a safe option would likely be bowser; he was always my pick in Mario Kart 64, Melee, and Brawl. though in terms of the entire series as a whole, i liked the luigis mansion ghost designs a lot.
a favourite nowadays? i'm not quite sure. if i had to pick an established character, it'd probably be wario or waluigi. in terms of the entire series, i like the Mario Sunshine boos design a lot... but that's narrowing it down too small because i like a whole lot of designs from the franchise, so it's really hard to pinpoint.
#ask#anon#kinda funny that i pick the ghost characters as designs i like while my main oc is a skeleton#anyway yeah its really hard to wager when it comes to the entirety of mario's games#like in comparson. i didnt play like. a massive ammount of crash bandicoot in comparison to mario games#but i can tell you my favourite character from those games is Dingodile#and then something similar with sonic the hedgehog. i really like Vector (atleast specifically from sonic heroes)#or eggman even. both his old designs and his current design. hes a really fun character#i think an early avatar i had on steam was fanart of dingodile#my favourite version of him is probably his look from crash bash. but his design from crash 4 is also really fucking great.#but ive always liked seeing dingodile as just. more animalistic. similar to most other bosses in Crash#like how he only makes animal noises when getting hurt or having a dumb laugh when winning in crash bash#juxtaposed to his first showcase in Crash 3 where he can talk. which thats fine and cool and all.#but i just really like how Crash Bash makes him more as just like. a sentient bipedal animal that still just makes animal noises#another series i can pinpoint a favourite towards is with Banjo Kazooie and Clanker.... my boy Clanker...#with tooie i also kinda like mr patch. ignoring one part of his characters design#he's visually goofy and i like the whole patch-work stuff in his design#anyway i hope that answers your question well enough anon

Very stressful question here, but favourite music?
I mean like anything, genre, artists, songs, ect;
- 🌪️
THIS IS SO BROAD, BUT UHHH LETS GET STARTED.
Not 100% sure of what counts as what genre but approximately, I've been listening to a lot of Indie pop, alt pop/rock, and folk but ive been getting into just. pop pop recently. God, I'm scrolling through my spotify playlists (I'm a chronic character/ship playlist maker) and theres so many artists and songs I love so I'm just gonna make a list under the cut since this is going to be. long.
Artists I've been listening to recently:
Chappell Roan (she's blowing up now and I feel like a proud parent and I want to gatekeep her so hard)
Sir Chloe
Bess Atwell (UNDERRATED !!! I love me my small artists)
Scotch & Water (my little band 🥺pretty much every song of theirs are on my top songs, so many good Vanessa songs)
AURORA
Paris Paloma
Brooke Bentham (ANOTHER SMALL ARTIST !!! her The Room Swayed EP is so good)
Billie Marten (my top artist last year, i listen to her music to go to sleep)
Fleurie
Ruelle (and Tommee Profitt but he makes a lot of songs with Fleurie and Ruelle. Their cinematic songs are so good)
Ruby Waters (she and Chappell are my sapphic pop girlies <3 songs that make me wish I was in the club)
Cruel Youth (such a unique voice, scratches my brain just right)
Ryn Weaver (she hasn't dropped a song in years and it bothers me to this day)
Zella Day
Lydia Luce (NEED MORE ATTENTION !!!)
Samia (also way too small!!! more people need to listen to her!!!)
KiNG MALA (another sapphic pop girlie <333)
Tommy Lefroy
Genevieve Stokes (I have her songs permenantly connected to my old blorbo)
Yoke Lore (some of my favorite folk songs, I need to listen to them more
Liza Anne (been listening to her since before she came out, this list made me realize how many sapphic artists i listen to)
And the obvious ones Mitski, Hozier, and Florence + The Machine
This list made me realize just how unbalanced my female to male music artist ratio is RFTGYHUJI
Some songs I felt needed to be called out specifically because GRAUUGHHRHRHR (<- abnormal about songs):
11 Hours by Wet
Gun by Scotch & Water (THE Vanessa Afton song)
Walk You Home by Sir Chloe
My Sails Are Set by AURORA (I found out after getting addicted to this song that its from the One Piece OST HAHSDH)
Good Luck, Babe! by Chappell Roan (again, love me some sapphic pop)
Sylvester by Bess Atwell (anything by Bess Atwell actually, god she's definitely one of my top artists this year fs)
I Need Your Body by Brooke Bentham (my top song last year, also listen to Oliver and I Loved The Way You Talked)
my mind (now) by Paris Paloma (again, Vanessa song)
Devil Makes 3 by Brassie
Green Eyes by JOSEPH (I got my friend addicted to this song)
Not Your Prey by Squirrel Flower
Pyromania by Royal & The Serpent, Tommee Profitt (the drop is mindnumbing, so ridiculously good)
Beige by Yoke Lore (the banjo??? iconic)
Occasionally by Lydia Luce (Dark River is also so good)
OKAY OKAY IM DONE, ILL LEAVE THIS WITH MY CURRENT FNAF PLAYLISTS SINCE MY PERSONAL PLAYLIST IS PRIVATED

Get to the person behind the blog 🌌
tagged by  @unholyfruitt :))) thank you!!!!
1. What your main hobbies/interests?
i write a lot! a mix of prose and poetry, but mostly poetry lately during quarantine. linguistics and languages as well, as that’s one of my majors. i love learning new languages and about the different ways that people communicate and connect with each other, esp dialects and sociolinguistics. i also play a handful of woodwind instruments and just started learning guitar about a year ago, and i hope to pick up the banjo once i’ve mastered fingerpicking
2. What are some Smaller interests you have that not so many know about?
i’m pretty good at cooking and love to make food for my friends/family. i love to hike with my dog, and i really like to play video games whenever i have the time, esp games with lots of lore/narrative-driven plot
3. What is your favourite sound?
loon calls, my cats purring, the warm tones of a bass clarinet, rain and thunderstorms, footprints in fresh snow, my friends’ laughs, washington square park on a saturday night
4. Is there a song, book or art piece (or anything else) that helped you achieve your aesthetic?
Andy Warhol and Robert Mapplethorpe’s photography of nyc queer and trans punk circles in the 60s-80s, Sufjan Stevens’ Illinois, Orville Peck’s Pony, the greasers in The Outsiders (1983), Paris is Burning (1990), Leonardo DiCaprio’s character in Romeo + Juliet (1996), and of course everyone’s favorite bisexual gamekeeper :)
5. What would you name your boat if you had one?
loverboy.
6. What's the closet thing to real magic in your perspective?
the romance and intimacy of loving and being loved, the human need to create, dreams, airplane rides, the night sky
7. Do you have a favourite period from history?
i’d say im most inspired by the 60s/70s/80s in a political sense, as there was so much foundational and revolutionary work going on globally and so much energy for change and equity, and i often look to activists and movements from these decades when im feeling defeated by the current political climate
8. What is the comfort food of your home country?
hmmm.... i’m from the us, so most of our comfort foods are region specific. some of my midwestern faves are cheese curds, fried pickles, Friday fish fry, and strawberry rhubarb pie :)
9. Who is your comfort character?
i have so many,,,, i’ll prob start with both Maurice Hall and Alec Scudder as I relate to them both immensely but in v diff ways. Stephen Gordon (The Well of Loneliness) is also eternally carved into my dyke heart. Holden Caulfield, Ponyboy Curtis, and Johnny Cade are some English class highlights, and Klaus Baudelaire and Zero (Holes 2003) are def up there as childhood faves.
im afraid of tagging anyone i dont know in these so im gonna tag my wonderful (and incredibly talented holy shit, her art is 😍) friend @waffletallest

Defining Memories, chapter 2
I’m... sorry about this one. Grant honestly deserves better characterization. After this we move on to characters I’m more comfortable with, and I think you’ll all agree it gets better.
---
The scene changed to that of an elementary school classroom. The children were scribbling in notebooks when the class bell rang, sending them all scampering out the classroom door. All but one: a blond little boy of about eight years. The teacher, a tall, black-haired man in his thirties approached him. “Ready for your music lesson?” he asked.
Sammy nodded in reply, and took a recorder out of his desk.
“Not until you speak to me. One sentence, alright? Say anything you want.”
Sammy froze up. He looked annoyed, but he obliged the teacher. “I’m ready to start.”
“That’s what you said yesterday. But what the heck, I’ll take it. Should we start with the same song as yesterday?”
Sammy nodded and began to play. Everyone in the room who didn’t know Sammy cringed back in anticipation of a small child’s musical talents, but Sammy played fairly well, and extremely well for his age.
The scene changed, and the group was in what looked to be a school music room. Several students were seated there, chattering and in many cases holding instruments. Sammy, looking a little older now and very nervous, peeked in. His teacher was there, as well. “I don’t know about this,” he said.
“Come on! After all that practice?
“What if I embarrass myself?”
“You’re new. No one expects you to be as good as you are. They don’t expect anyone going in there the first time to know anything.”
“Thanks, but... what if I can’t speak?”
The teacher raised an eyebrow. “When’s the last time that happened?”
Sammy thought on that a moment. “Three months ago.”
“That’s a pretty good streak, isn’t it?”
Sammy nodded, though he didn’t look so sure. He went in.
His teacher had been right about one thing: no one expected a new member of an elementary school band to know anything. It was expected that the newbies would have to be taught an instrument before they could play with the older members of the band. The band teacher explained this, Sammy thought on which instrument he’d like to learn.
Sammy had brought along his recorder, on which he was well-practiced. But the novelty of the more impressive instruments was calling him as loudly as the safety it held. He could have chosen his favourite instrument, the banjo. He’d always felt it was a rather embarrassing instrument to play, but if he was going to come out of his shell, he might as well do it all the way. Or, he could choose the most dignified instrument he could think of: the violin. But that would require giving up his advantage over the others. In what was for Sammy a considerable act of courage, ran for it and picked it up as soon as the band teacher allowed them to.
“No running!” The teacher shouted. “Sit down, Sammy, you’ll choose last.” But it was still there for him afterwards.
The scene changed a final time to show Sammy playing the violin on stage with the band. Current-day Sammy Lawrence sat back and smiled with joy and pride as the scene faded back into mist, taking the sound of his violin with it. That teacher who had helped him out of his shell had surely been one of the most important influences in his life, and he was grateful. Susie and Joey lauded some praise on him. He could see similar approval in Henry and Bertrum’s faces, as with most of the faces in the room. All but one.
Grant Cohen gave Sammy a nervous attempt at an approving smile before focusing back onto the blue light he held in his hands. The knots in his guts tightened. Why had the light’s colour only changed for him? And his defining memory- what could it be?
The scene changed, and all eyes in the room shifted to face it. It was a little study nook in the library of Grant’s old university. Grant could see his younger self studying and wearing a hoodie from the university with the hood up because he didn’t want to be bothered, didn’t want to feel seen. Similarly, he hoped that none of his coworkers would recognize him either. The hoodie looked ridiculous with the dress pants he was wearing. He’d made a promise to himself to start dressing for confidence, only to end up bringing along his sweater and spend most of the day hiding behind it, especially during times of stress.
This memory-Grant was sure of what it was now-certainly took place during a time of stress. Finals had been coming up, and he had a 62% average in a required class. The 78% he needed on the final seemed impossible. The stress had been enough to keep him up at night.
“Hmm... where are you, Grant?” Lacie asked through the silence.
“I don’t know. Let’s look,” Grant answered, thankful for the opportunity to hide what was about to happen. He began to lead the others away from the young man he had been, looking into study nooks for a man he could pass off as himself. Then, it happened. Grant heard ragged breathing, followed by a sob. He tried to hurry the others along, it was no use. Henry wanted to investigate. He listened in terror as the breathing grew worse, until he sounded like he was going to choke. Another student got up to investigate, and the thirteen employees followed. The young man was shaking and crying, his hood pulled back now to reveal dull brown hair and spectacles much like Grant’s own. He gave the other student a frozen stare. “Are you okay?” the other student asked.
Grant quickly shook his head. He opened his mouth and found himself unable to speak at first. Finally, words escaped, quietly at first: “I-I need you to call someone!"
A bit stunned, the other student hesitated a moment.
"Go!" He yelled. "I’m having a heart attack! Call someone!”
The student hurried off, presumably to find someone who would know what to do in this situation.
The older incarnation hid his eyes. The young man didn’t know what a panic attack felt like. Grant didn’t need to look to see what would happen next, and prayed that it wouldn’t be shown to the others. He looked up at the shaking young man. The snapped pencil on the desk. The words “I’m going to fail and die” written large over a page of mathematical exercises. His clenched teeth and hand over heart. His body’s reaction to stress making him legitimately terrified for his life.
Thankfully, that’s when the scene faded away. He would have died of embarrassment if it had gone on much longer.
“Buddy. You had a heart attack in your twenties?” Shawn asked.
Grant abjectly pulled his hands over his face, but quickly took them back down and attempted to reclaim his dignity. “No. My first panic attack. I know what they feel like now, see? That’s the only time I ever mistook them for something else.” He heard someone snickering, but didn’t check to see who.
“I’m really sorry that this was your memory,” Lacie said.
“It’s fine. It’s not as though I didn’t know it about myself. Or like I'm having them on a regular basis. It's unimportant”
“Well, congratulations,” Norman said, taking Grant aback.
“Congratulations? For what?”
“For getting into one of the top universities in the state, that’s what.”
“Well, thank you,” he said. It was relieving to know that Norman at least still had a shred of respect for him.
“Plus, you thought you were going to fail. Well, you really showed yourself, now didn’t ya?” Lacie gave his friend a playful punch on the shoulder.
"Okay, this is great and all, but I think we have bigger fish to fry," Thomas cut in. "Some of us are going to have good memories, and some of us are going to have bad memories. So we'd better all hope that we don't have any..." he searched for the right words, "misdeeds we'd rather keep buried. Now tell me honestly, you four," he motioned to Joey, Bertrum, Sammy, and Grant, "were those your absolute best and worst memories, respectively? Or were they just some of them?"
"It was my best, certainly!" Bertrum exclaimed. The other three exchanged awkward glances.
"It's close, but it could be mine," Joey decided.
"It was mine," Sammy decided.
"Probably," Grant decided. In that moment, the light, still floating nearby him, changed colours back to yellow, and the scene changed again.
The group saw Grant, looking not much younger than he had been in the last memory, approaching what must have been his family's house. He looked into the mailbox and pulled out a letter with a university address on it. He hesitated a moment before gently putting it back in the mailbox and heading inside. No need to work himself up about it when he wouldn't have to know for a while. The scene shifted to a few hours later, when the family was having dinner.
"Grant, something came in the mail for you today," his mother said, handing him the envelope.
Grant turned away from it, as though disgusted. "Can I wait to open it since we don't need to know for a while?"
"Just open it. We want to know, too."
Grant sighed and opened it up while averting his eyes. His mother came up behind him and looked over his shoulder. "You got in!"
"What?" He whipped his head back to look at the piece of paper, and a huge smile spread across his face. With that, the scene faded back to mist.
"Wow. So we all get two memories. One good, one bad,” Grant said. What a relief. For a second, he thought only a few of them would have bad memories while everyone else got something positive, but this way it wasn’t nearly as embarrassing.
“You know what that means..." Thomas said. "It means that none of you are out of the woods."
Thomas', Norman's, and Henry's eyes all came to rest upon Joey, though all three wondered if he had enough capacity for guilt to have a wrongdoing as his worst memory. Thomas and Sammy were just as concerned for themselves. No matter what, this would certainly prove to be an illuminating event.

I bought myself a violin a week ago and am excited to learn that. I songwrite too. I'm currently working on a quarantine ep and have 5 songs done. I like writing too, and poetry it comes hand in hand with songwriting. I'm binging Downton Abbey right now and obsessed, my fave character is Lady Mary. My favourite albums from Taylor are Red and Lover. I cant pick a favourite song because I love them all. The songs I've been vibing to recently are Starlight (most underrated song) and Sad Beautiful Tradgic.

I'm not good in tagging people... but here a headcanon about my favourite characters: I know it is canon that Ford doesn't like Fidds' banjo plucking after 8pm, but wouldn't it be nice to think that Ford likes to sing when he's in the mood? Singing loud and free aslong there is no one around (apart from Fidds) X3

N64 Switch Online Wishlist
I wrote a N64 Switch Online Wishlist some time ago on a personal blog. Since I’m sorta fitting this as my N64 fan blog. I feel the listicle translates here even if N64 Switch Online has since been announced. Check out how right or wrong I was.
---
I see enough of these online; it’s the laziest engagement grabbing commentary possible. What’s your hypothetical “hit list” for a N64 mini or Switch Online. For the insatiable gamers it’s heroin to talk down a Nintendo Switch Online release like Jelly Boy and then immediately turn around and say “Why release this when there are countless other titles under Nintendo’s ownership given the shaft?!” Namely, Super Mario RPG or Earthbound.
Fandom is a vast complexity and presently my entire mood is to not engage and just move on. As sure as the sky is blue, passionate fans will log-on and complain or barrack behind a company in an ongoing war where nobody really wins in the end.
Anyways, lest I digress here’s my list based on previous releases on Virtual Consoles and just whatever I think fits based on current trends.
Super Mario 64 – Goes without saying. Mario’s first foray into 3D brought the imagination out in players, modelling the N64 controller on the breadth of movement the aerobatic plumber can produce is an incredible feature. It’s just as bright and enjoyable to play through today – and its inclusion on the Super Mario 3D All Stars says it is possible.
F-Zero X – A fully 3D interpretation of F-Zero without the Mode 7 trickery of yore. A lightning speed racer built to handle a whopping 60 fps. People have been clamouring for an F-Zero continuation for years, whilst Fast Racing Neo has been unofficially handed the mantle F-Zero X is still impressive today.
Mario Kart 64 – The emergence of Mario Kart it its finalised form, filled with expressive tracks, items and being 4-player multiplayer. Mario Kart 64 is a title I played most of all racers. 4 player online would be a very sweet treat, however as good as I think an online time trials leadership would be… it’s not a real possibility.
Yoshi’s Story – What the original Yoshi Island did, Yoshi’s Story handled differently to say the least. Away with the typical level progression, players are placed in a 6 world storybook where dependant on how many hearts players collected (0, 1, 2 or 3) determines what levels will be available to players on the next world. Levels are completed when a number of fruit is eaten, rather than reaching the conclusion or end to a level. Unfortunately it was perceived as too easy and simple – missing some of the magic Yoshi’s Island on the SNES had.
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards – All Kirby titles have this whimsical quality and while many other titles jumped to 3D, Kirby stuck to the 2.5D side-scroller format, I’ll say it’s fun in small bursts and includes Kirby abilities you can merge together for some additional experimentation and fun.
Star Fox 64 – Upgraded the wireframe form of the SNES title to full 3D models of the N64. Full branching paths that followed the trend of “fully realised” titles in 3D space. It’s an awesome 3D shooter that I haven’t spent enough time with.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time – Basically set the mould for all future 3D Zelda titles, immaculate storytelling with the return of some set-pieces of A Link to the Past in an expressive 3D world. Included amazing dungeons and lively townships as well as introduced the Z-Targeting system. Short of being one of Nintendo’s greatest, it is a sure inclusion.
Sin and Punishment – An arcade on-rails shooter that doesn’t get the given praise of earlier Treasure titles that appeared on the Mega Drive. The game uses almost a twin-stick design on an N64 controller, handling player movement and the shooting cursor simultaneously to take out enemies – both through shooting and through close combat physical fighting. Stylistically awesome and honestly the more people with access to this the better!
Super Smash Bros – Choose your Nintendo favourite and fight it out with your friends! The first in a huge series, everything can be tracked back to the original – the base characters here perform similarly in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and of course all the stages feature in Ultimate too.
Paper Mario – Spiritual successor to Super Mario RPG on the SNES. This falls into the “unsure” category, we are yet to see Super Mario RPG on Switch so far. But we have seen Paper Mario Origami King – and this is very similar. Learning the weaknesses of each character and the timing of moves is key to winning encounters handily. Definitely a fun game with ounces of charm. At a time when the Mario characters weren’t super expressive Paper Mario really rounded out the edges of series personalities.
Pokemon Snap – Get snap happy with your friends, a cult classic release which has since spanned its own “New” sequel. It’s an on rails shooter meets Pokemon photography, you’re scored based on Pokemon’s activity and placement in frame. This game encourages replaying levels to find hidden secrets. I feel this is a good nostalgia grab that encourages fans to check out the new title.
1080(degrees sign) Snowboarding – Nintendo pulled back a little to their classic “Black Box” style of sporting games from NES with a little more 90’s flare. What I mean to say is, this is a realistic take on Snowboarding showcasing great snow textures that set the formula for the genre on N64.
Wave Race 64 – Much like 1080 Snowboarding, Wave Race showcases the realistic water rippling effects of the N64 and demonstrates a more arcade inspired realistic take. There are passionate fans of the series.
The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask – This I place on a “later down the line” release, not a launch N64 Switch Online title. It’s the oddball sequel to Ocarina of Time, explore the land of Termina to retrieve a lost friend in a harrowing dooms day scenario where within 3 days the moon will destroy the world. The game has its own 3 day clock with events occurring in real time, rote memorisation of time is necessary to progression and in terms of supporting cast this houses some of the best. If I could wipe any game from my memory it would be this just so I could play it again blind.
Mario Tennis – It’s Mario, it’s Tennis. Introduction of the great Waluigi! Plays like an action tennis game with many zany power-ups and antics. Great fun.
Mario Golf – It’s Mario, it’s Golf. Game developers Camelot of Shining series and Golden Sun games were involved, I hear it’s fairly RPG orientated… But who knows it could be the more action orientated counterpart to the Game Boy Colours RPG leanings.
Donkey Kong 64 – This is debatable but people love the Saturday Morning antics of the DK Crew. Possibly taking the formula set by Super Mario 64 a step too far. With 5 characters to change between to use in many situational circumstances and too many collectables to even count. It’s hit and miss.
Ogre Battle 64: Persons of Lordly Calibre – A real-time strategy RPG which in part is almost a parallel to Final Fantasy Tactics. I can honestly say I haven’t given this series the time. While these have in past been readily available on Virtual Console, the first title Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen is yet to be available on the Super Nintendo service.
Mario Party 2 – It’s Mario, it’s a party. Arguably the best of the series. This is a 4-player board game/mini-game extravaganza. Which introduced themed costumes and a set of items for each character in each map – which is the stand-out feature honestly. Screw your friends over in the ongoing quest to beat a series of Bowsers.
Please note: I wrote this “listicle” back in 2020; since then some things have changed. Such as Mario Party Superstars being a remaster of previous maps and games means Mario Party 2 becomes a less likely candidate. Nintendo has generally been good with keeping the N64 spirit alive with Stages from Super Smash Bros. in Ultimate and new releases for basically every franchise. 5/10/21: The N64 doesn’t have a huge library but I managed to guess... 13 of the 16 coming to the Western service. I would not have ever guessed Banjo-Kazooie would ever arrive being a Rare property (even if it is on Smash Bros.) - I listed Donkey Kong 64 as an aspirational choice. Didn’t really know about Dr. Mario 64 (and neither did Japan). Operation WinBack is an odd third party option and I’m looking forward to the potential for more obscure options like Hybrid Heaven or Body Harvest and further Japanese titles. The first addendum discounts Mario Party 2 and Super Smash Bros. somewhat. Whereas Wave Racer 64, 1080 Snowboarding and Pilotwings 64 may be later additions.

28: take a shot every time i mention taylor swift
AC/DC - What are your favorite bands? - Of Monsters and Men, Sleeping At Last, The Lumineers.
Aerosmith - What are your favorite songs? - Oh boy. There's a lot but these are the ones I'll never be able to get over: All Too Well by Taylor Swift, Exile by Taylor Swift ft Bon Iver, Wild Heart by Bleachers, Saturdays by Twin Shadow, Wild Roses by Of Monsters and Men, Fast Car by Tracy Chapman, Every Breath You Take by The Police, Robbers by The 1975, Hunger by Of Monsters and Men, and Sleep On The Floor by The Lumineers
Aretha Franklin - Do you have a favorite jazz song? - No, I don't really listen to jazz
Alice Cooper - What is your favorite type of music? - I mostly gravitate to folk/alternative, pop, country-pop, and singer-songwriter genres (I like a little bit of EDM too depending on the song).
Beach Boys - Have you ever been in a concert? - I've never been to a concert of someone I super duper admired, but I've been to a Jonas Brothers concert when I was ten lol and then Marianas Trench when I was 15 which I remember being a pretty good show.
Black Sabbath - A song that motivates you? - Shake It Off by Taylor Swift gets me in a good mood
Bob Dylan - Do you know how to play any musical instrument? - No lol. I tried to learn how to play guitar but I just don't really have any sense of rhythm at all lmao
Bon Jovi - Your favorite song about love? - Can't Help Falling In Love With You by Elvis Presley (and various cover artists) has always been a favourite of mine.
The Beatles - Latest song that made you smile? - Mr Perfectly Fine by Taylor Swift bc it's peak sassy teenage taylor
David Bowie - A song that makes you feel happy? - again, probably Shake It Off by Taylor Swift, but also Truth Hurts by Lizzo
Eric Clapton - Have you ever been in love with a rock artist? - No
Creedence Clearwater Revival - What is your favorite instrument? - I really like the sound of an acoustic guitar, but also the violin is so beautiful. (Honourable mentions: Fiddle, Banjos, cellos)

Fleetwood Mac - Female or Male vocalists? - Both have different, unique things to offer, but I guess female vocalists.
The Grateful Dead - What song are you listening right now? - Nothing right now. I usually can't focus when musics on because I just end up singing along or getting distracted lol
Guns n’ Roses - What song describes your emotions right now? - I'm somewhere in between Mirrorball by Taylor Swift, Reasons Not To Die by Ryn Weaver, and Wild Roses by Of Monsters and Men.
Heart - Do you know a song that you want at your wedding? - Yes! Tbh I want to have a playlist of love songs played during the reception at my wedding lol. I think I want to walk down the aisle to A Thousand Years by Christina Perri (maybe the piano guys version tho) and I want the first dance to be Lover by Taylor Swift or Can't Help Falling In Love by Kina Grannis
Iron Maiden - Do you frequently listen to your songs on shuffle? - Mostly, I do. I don't usually know what I'm in the mood for unless I've had something stuck in my head or a new song has come out so I usually just play shuffle until I know what I feel like listening to.
Jimi Hendrix - A song that represents “your aesthetic” - Love by Lana Del Rey, just that very soft, breezy, dreamy aesthetic.
Joan Jett - Who do you think when you listen to your favorite love song? - I'm not usually thinking of anyone in particular because I don't have anyone like that in my life, but I'm usually imagining a scenario to write about.

Super Speculation Brothers: Ultimate Prediction
Speculation on the Super Smash Brothers Ultimate Fighters Pass is my new favourite example of how complex statistical predictions can get, especially because I've been out of the Super Smash news loop since ~2008.
There were all sorts of requests for characters during the lifetime of SSBM (Super Smash Brothers Melee), and for the original on the Nintendo 64. and almost all of the most popular requests (that fall in line with M. Sakurai's only 2 genuine rules: it has to be a video game character, and there has to be a possible moveset) have been fulfilled. Sonic, Snake, Diddy Kong, Megaman, Bayonetta, Ridley, Cloud, and Ryu were all highly requested by fans, and all have made it into the roster. More recently, Sephiroth, Steve & Alex, and Banjo & Kazooie got in, and were also long-requested characters.
so, when it comes to predicting who will get into the Super Smash Ultimate roster, fan-requests and popularity are by far the most important metric.
But the accuracy of predictions depends on how broad or narrow your claim is (of course its easy to make trivial broad predictions, e.g. "tomorrow night the moon will be in sky"). For example, Min Min is the fighter from ARMS, and an ARMS fighter on the roster was already highly-requested and highly-predicted. There were few true predictions for Min Min's inclusion, but there were a lot of predictions for the ARMS series. on the other hand, Joker from Persona5 was a highly unpredictable inclusion. and out in the middle of prediction, everybody was predicting a character from Xenoblade Chronicles, but a majority of predictions appeared to be for Rex (& Pyra), not the Pyra\Mythra duo. and I haven't even gotten to the fact that true details were sometimes leaked out early, that "inclusion" into SSBU is itself pretty broad (fighters aren't the only way to include characters or a video game series), and the whole shotgun effect because there are so many people predicting who will be included into Smash Ultimate - inevitably some number of those predictions will be correct, even if its only the medium-level predictions of, say, which series will get in under any category, rather than naming an individual character for an individual slot on the Fighters Pass.
Current popular speculations for Fighters Pass 2: Crash Bandicoot from Crash, Master Chief from Halo, Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden, Lloyd Irving from Tales Of Symphonia, and Dr. Eggman\Robotnik from Sonic.
Personally, I want Shantae, and Rayman, from their respective eponymous series. or a character from Golden Sun: The Lost Age, maybe Felix? But who do I actually predict? I'm gonna have to go with Lloyd Irving, Crash Bandicoot, or Master Chief for at least one slot, because these 3 are the most-requested characters from Japan, Europe, and the USA. also I do think it's likely that there will be a 3rd Fighters Pass later, or possibly a few individual fighters.
As an adult, I don't really suffer from the whole Fear-Of-Missing-Out because I've just got too much other stuff to attend to.. but I can't deny that it feels pretty awesome to get back into Smash and see the new fighters release, even if I only jumped in right after Byleth was announced, finishing Fighters Pass 1.

Note
Besides Crash and Rayman, what else do you like?
Oooh let me do a proper list!
Croc (From Croc Legend of the Gobbos - Croc 2)
It’s a lovely platformer where you play as a Crococile (called Croc) who got adopted by furballs named Gobbos.
The story? The evil wizard Baron Dante (one of my favourite villains along with Razor!), fed up of seeing the Gobbos around, decides to scatter them around and to capture Rufus, the king of the Gobbos (and Croc’s adoptive father to an extend).
The series sadly died out, the previous company going bankrupt, as the current owner of the series refuses to do anything with the game series... I still try to do fanart and roleplay to keep the legend going!
Well, I don’t roleplay as Croc himself, but as Baron Dante! You can pass by to say hi :D
The game kinda suffers from bad controls and glitchy cameras, but honestly it’s worth a try. ;D
Mario (Do I really need to specify the games?)
The very first fandom I got into, and still is! Not as much as the Rayman and Croc one, but you get me.
Fave characters are Waluigi (number waaane!), Luigi (protect him at all cost) and Bowser himself!
Kirby (dittooo)
It was more in the past, but I still adore these series. :D Did you know that Meta Knight was the main inspiration from where my username came from? ;D He’s also my fave character as you could have noticed...
Oh, as much as I love the games, the anime was a big part of my childhood. Should rewatch it someday!
Pokemon
This one goes on by waves- sometimes I’m 100% into it, other times I let it by the side, completly uninterested. I’m in the second phase lately, but the current pokemon anime in Alola keeps me linked a little to this series!
Banjo Kazooie, Conker (Rare games)
I was more into these when I was a teen! (Yes, even Conker... Didn’t finish it for obvious reasons, was way too young for that)
But I had so much fun playing the two first games, and would love to give a shot one day to the third one, even if the fandom will say how bad it is... I don’t care, the music remixes they have done is a marvel!
Didn’t get my hands on Yooka Laylee, this said...
Steven Universe
Can’t really say I belong in the fandom, but I’m just a casual fan who adores the series- no matter the flaws some people will mention concerning the animation mistakes... It’s just a shame there are so many hiatuses lately. :/
Dangan Ronpa
(This reminds me my best friend offered me the last game and I still didn’t find the time to properly play it.... I should!)
I’m aware this is a huge contrast with the previous entries - not really in the fandom but maan I really got into the anime and the games. The scenario put into it is incredible, and I love how all the puzzle pieces of the plot finally get together as you play all the games. Wonder what the last one will bring me!
Could say more but I’ll just mention them quickly: Ratchet and Clank, Wander Over Yonder, Undertale (only pacifist though), Puella Magi - Madoka Magica, Star Wars... and I’m probably missing a lot but oh well I’ll stop there.
This said, you can always ask me if I know a certain series? Maybe with some luck I forgot to mention it ;D
